Core Competencies

Applicants for certification as a Practitioner or Fellow are required to demonstrate all the following Core Competencies.

Selected Competencies


1.1 Actively and continuously participate in personal and professional development in the career management field in order to be knowledgeable about best practices

1.2 Strengthen the career management capability of an individual or an organization by assessing, exploring, challenging, advising, recommending alternatives and providing feedback on assumptions, attitudes, behaviors and perceptions

1.3 Possess a broad knowledge of theories and approaches to career management services and apply the appropriate approach to meet the unique needs of a client

1.4 Demonstrate awareness of diversity issues and modify style and approach accordingly with clients and colleagues from different social, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, religious, cultural, generational backgrounds and physical and mental capabilities

1.5 Possess broad knowledge of career assessment tools and processes. Demonstrate the effective use of at least one to assess a client's capabilities, needs and limits to create a foundation for career planning and implementation

1.6 Analyze and assess client's working environment in the context of business, political, social and economic factors

1.7 Develop strategies for learning and development to improve client's performance and further long term goals

1.8 Understand how an organization's culture impacts career management and use this knowledge to help clients develop effective career strategies

1.9 Assess when to refer a client with special issues/needs, identify external resources and, when necessary, link the client to those resources

1.10 Clarify client goals and objectives and establish an agreement regarding how career services will meet them, including service parameters, logistics, fees, commitments and outcomes. Keep accurate records and report appropriately to clients

1.11 Enable individuals to enhance life balance and professional growth by guiding them to identify and select among options that take into consideration life stage and individual development

1.12 Enhance awareness of the value of professional career management services, increasing the public's ability to discriminate wisely in selecting qualified practitioners who reflect the highest standards of our profession's values and expertise


2.1 Carry out an analysis of work alignment and performance using assessment instruments and, through consultation with the client, develop a plan consistent with the client's capabilities and aspirations

2.2 Provide advice on how to set up an internal organizational career center and/or manage a career center

2.3 Advise individual and/or organization clients on issues related to job loss or employee termination

2.4 Understand the elements of a Strategic Plan in order to guide an organization through the process and ensure organizational structure and staffing are optimum

2.5 Understand the basic principles of project management and advise client(s) on general steps to plan and complete a career profession related project

2.6 Present career programs, facilitate groups or counsel on topics such as entrepreneurship, change management, planning for retirement, personal development and other career related topics

2.7 Teach managers and leaders the skills to coach, manage performance, and develop employees

2.8 Set up succession planning and employee monitoring systems to assist organizations in continuous renewal

2.9 Guide and advise organizations on effective strategies and policies for retaining employees

2.10 Provide guidance and training to clients on the job search process, including preparing résumés and cover letters, developing a marketing plan, networking, interviewing and negotiating

2.11 Following an assessment of entrepreneurial potential, assist clients to explore self-employment options

2.12 Demonstrate effective communication and conflict resolution skills

2.13 Advise and consult with clients in developing methods, tools and frameworks for managers, leaders and staff to achieve organizational goals while dealing with such issues as change, transition, growth, downsizing and reorganization, while maintaining optimum employee performance and retention

2.14 Provide 360° feedback through prescribed methods of assessment and feedback that enhance growth, respect the uniqueness of the individual and encourage professional/personal development

2.15 Promote and protect the credibility of the career professional field through volunteer contributions of time, talents and resources

2.16 Expand the body of knowledge of the career professional field through research, development and publication

2.17 Demonstrate effectiveness in leading groups addressing career management issues with an awareness of the benefits and challenges of group dynamics

2.18 Demonstrate knowledge of on-line, print and experiential career resources and the ability to guide clients in using them

2.19 Other: Identify another competency that you would like to use to demonstrate your qualifications for certification and explain why it is relevant to the career professional field
